Engagement and the University
- The diagram demonstrates the relationship of engagement to the missions of teaching, research and service in the modern university.
- The outer circle represents external constituencies and/or stakeholders. The three intersecting circles (A, B & C) represent the traditional university functions. In many cases these functions overlap (D, E, F & G).
- University Engagement occurs when the traditional activities are conducted with external partners for mutual benefit.
- As the three intersecting circles expand to fill the larger stakeholder circle, the more engaged the university becomes.
- The expansion of the core (G) maximizes the University's resources for the public good.

“Outreach is an essential component of the mission of a land-grant university. To help facilitate outreach and engagement activities, we have established an Office of University Outreach and this website. I hope that this Office will facilitate the engagement of external constituencies with University of Connecticut faculty and professional staff in scholarly activities that are mutually beneficial and further the economic development needs of the state.” — Peter Nicholls, Provost
